{"id":2731,"date":"2022-05-13T17:37:55","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T15:37:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/endometriosis-surgery.gr\/?p=2731"},"modified":"2022-05-13T17:45:13","modified_gmt":"2022-05-13T15:45:13","slug":"the-myth-regarding-medical-therapy-of-endometriosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/endometriosis-surgery.gr\/en\/the-myth-regarding-medical-therapy-of-endometriosis\/","title":{"rendered":"The Myth regarding medical \u201ctherapy\u201d of endometriosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Very often we hear about cases in which endometriosis patients receive medical-hormonal regimens in order to \u201ctreat\u201d their disease.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The medical regimens \u00a0used for this purpose are usually:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>contraceptive pills<\/li>\n<li>progesterone<\/li>\n<li>GnRH analogues ( Arvekap,Lupron ,Zoladex etc)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But is that true?Do these medication cure endometriosis?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The short answer is <strong><u>NO.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These medication work by lowering the level of pain caused by endometriosis implants.But they have <strong>NO <\/strong>effect on endometriosis lesions.As a result the decrease of pain level is perceived <u>falsely <\/u>by the patient and her doctor as a cure ,whereas in reality endometriosis continues to grow and spread inside her body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately still in many countries of the world many Gynaecologists\u00a0 prescribe these medication as a treatment or cure for endometriosis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In our daily clinical practice we witness regularly cases where endometriosis patients (who have been taking such medication for a long time) come for a consultation and we discover (to the patient\u2019s surprise) that the disease has also affected vital organs like the bowel or has caused some stricture to the ureter, thus affecting kidney function.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This case is very usual and the women\u2019s first reaction is \u201cbut how did this happen?I have taking this or the other medication\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Patients must be aware that hormonal medication that are widely used to treat-cure endometriosis have <strong>no effect<\/strong> upon the disease itself.They may \u00a0cause a reduction in the intensity of symptoms but they <strong>don\u2019t treat endometriosis itself.<\/strong>They \u00a0can also cause many long-term side effects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Gold Standard<\/strong> approach to treating endometriosis is <strong>excision surgery<\/strong>.This technique offers high and permanent cure rates since all endometriosis lesions are excised from their \u201croot\u201d and there is no residual disease after the end of the procedure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The precondition for the above is that the procedure is undertaken by Gynaecologists who are specialized in treating endometriosis and who a) can identify all the forms that endometriosis can get inside the body and b) have the necessary training and surgical skills to complete such procedures as many times these procedures can be tougher that Gynae-Onco procedures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Very often we hear about cases in which endometriosis patients receive medical-hormonal regimens in order to \u201ctreat\u201d their disease.
